Fawkes — On the Middle Name

Phoenixes, masks, and one perfect November in 1605

Some middle names are gentle: a grandfather, a maiden name, a saint. Hugo Fawkes Rathbun’s middle name is a literal symbol of revolution, immortality, and rebirth.

Let’s break it down.

1. Guy Fawkes — November 5, 1605

A man named Guy Fawkes is caught beneath the House of Lords with 36 barrels of gunpowder. He is part of the Gunpowder Plot, an attempt to blow up the English king and Parliament in one go.

He is captured. He is executed. He becomes the most famous failed revolutionary in English history.

“Remember, remember, the fifth of November — gunpowder, treason and plot. I see no reason why gunpowder treason should ever be forgot.”

For four hundred years, England has burned effigies of Fawkes every November 5. He is, paradoxically, the most famous loser in the English-speaking world — and somehow also a folk hero.

2. Fawkes the Phoenix — Hogwarts, c. 1991

J.K. Rowling reaches into the same well. Fawkes is the name of Dumbledore’s phoenix — a bird that bursts into flame, dies, and is reborn from its own ashes.

The phoenix’s tail feather is the core of Harry Potter’s wand. And the core of Voldemort’s wand. Two destinies, one bird.

The name Fawkes, in this universe, means: the thing that cannot be destroyed.

3. V wears the mask — 2005, then forever

Alan Moore writes a graphic novel called V for Vendetta. In 2005 it becomes a film. The protagonist — a masked anarchist who blows up Parliament on November 5 — wears a stylized Guy Fawkes mask.

He is played by Hugo Weaving.

That mask becomes the symbol of Anonymous, Occupy, and a generation of online resistance. It is on a thousand protest signs. It is, by 2026, the most recognized mask on Earth after Mickey Mouse.

A man named Hugo wore the mask of a man named Fawkes.

4. April 28, 2026 — the names converge

A baby is born north of Seattle. His parents name him:

Hugo Fawkes Rathbun.

The two names that Hugo Weaving wore, in two of the most iconic roles of the 21st century, are now the first and middle names of one human being.

The phoenix and the revolutionary share a name with him. The Fire Horse year shares a sky with him. The recursion is, as far as we can tell, unprecedented.

5. The Fire Horse coincidence

The Chinese zodiac assigns each year an animal and an element. Hugo’s birth year, 2026, is the Year of the Fire Horse — a placement that occurs only once every 60 years (1846, 1906, 1966, 2026, 2086).

Fire Horses are described as: wild, charismatic, brilliant, unstoppable, prone to greatness.

Hugo. Fawkes. Phoenix. Fire. Horse.

Every layer of his name is fire that does not go out.

A note for the file

The Fawkes acronym, by the way — fully optional, fully delivered:

Fierce And Wildly Kind, Endlessly Spiriting (as in: full of, and giving, spirit)

Or, in dev mode:

git tag -s v1.0.0 -m "Hugo Fawkes Rathbun — released 2026-04-28T11:37:00-07:00" (The -s is for signed. Of course it is.)
